Fix "Image too generic" disapprovals on Shopify

The error

Image too generic

What it means

Google disapproved the product because its main image does not clearly show the product being sold. Generic images, a brand logo used as the photo, a plain color swatch, or a "no image available" placeholder all fail this check. The product stays disapproved and won't show in free listings or Shopping ads until you supply an image of the actual item.

Why it happens on Shopify

On Shopify this typically comes from variant images that are color swatches rather than photos, a single brand-logo graphic reused as the product image, or a theme/app placeholder that gets sent to Google when a product has no real photo. Drop-shipping imports and partially set-up products are common sources.

How to fix it

  1. Upload a clear photo that shows the principal product as the main image, not a logo, swatch, or placeholder.
  2. For variant products, give each variant an image of that variant rather than a flat color chip, or let the default product image carry the listing.
  3. Remove any "no image available" or logo-only graphics from products you send to Google.
  4. Reupload the corrected image, then request a review in Merchant Center. Separately, plan to use larger images (Google's 500x500 minimum starts as warnings in 2026 and is enforced from January 31, 2027) so you also clear that upcoming size bar.

Different from "Image too small": this is about what the image shows (the actual product), not its pixel dimensions. The 500x500 minimum is a separate, future requirement (warnings 2026, enforced Jan 31, 2027), not the cause of this disapproval.
